Russia and the start of a long road, literally

Mixed emotions and this so-called evil empire that is Russia was our next challenge. Russia in plain words is Russia, and according to our friend Aleksey, if you can drive through Africa, Russia is like Switzerland, and so far not quite counting road quality, he is right. First of all, entering Russia is not scary. [...]

Marine Resource Expedition in Norway

We are in Russia, what is in stall next and what to look out for!!

We are currently in Russia and heading into the guts of Siberia. We still have to do the project reports for Oceana, ICCAT and Norway. We have been so pushed for time and I have so much reading material to process that our projects page is a little behind the times. We hope that while [...]

Diving in Kirkenes and the freeze that is the Arctic Circle

We wanted to end our Norwegian diving experience by diving with the king crab in Kirkenes. So we called around and discovered that the dive school there charges R6000 for a dive and they only cater for groups, so a bit despondent we remembered, Ben our friend with whom we dived in Saltstrumen had given [...]

Kirkenes and our Russian decision issues

We had been toying with this decision for a few days now. Russia stood looming over our heads and we had been trying to find out as much information about the road from Murmansk to St Petersburg form fellow travelers, campsite managers and locals as possible. Every which was we turned we were receiving conflicting [...]

Gamvick and the northern most lighthouse on main land in the world

After a year and a month or soon the road we finally made it to the nearly the most northern point in the world. I say nearly because if you wan to be all geographical about things Gamvick was not really THE most northern point in the world. A town called Nordkapp, literally was 71.14 [...]

Tromso

Loforten was amaizing but we had some fisheries questions to ask in Tromso. Tromso has a marine research station, scientists who work for the governemt researching fisheries related issues. Also the University of Tromso where I am interested in doing a PhD has an interesting and well-established fisheries department. Entering Tromso I saw a sign [...]

Diving Nusfjord, surfing some arctic freeze and meeting Lena an inspiration

Having caught the last ferry across Vestfjorden at 9pm, we arrived in Loforten after 10 pm, so we decided to sleep on the roadside and drive the 200 odd kilometers to Nusfjord, where we would be diving the next day. As predicted the drive was spectacular. Some of the world’s oldest rocks accentuate the radical [...]

Saltstrumen to Helnessund

After our interesting diving ordeal we packed the car with our wet dive gear and decided to gain some kilometers under our belt. Instead of taking the ferry across to Loforten, we headed up the road to Helnessund, where we met up with Gunnar Album, a fisheries biologist working with Friends of the Earth. Gunnar [...]

Gulen to Saltstrumen and diving the worlds fastest tidal current

My dry suite flooded.
And it did so not in nice, pleasant, fairly agreeable cold water. It decided to flood in 8 degree, semi-polar stomach winding cold water, leaving me to swear and curse under the trail of bubbles leaping from the back of my neck for 30 minutes underwater.
We had decided to dive in Saltstrumen, [...]
